"When I was in the second grade, I was struggling in school.
At 8 years old, I couldn’t read. I was so far behind academically that my parents did not think I would make it to 3rd grade.
But, I had an incredible teacher. Her name was Mrs. Hargis, and she was everything you could ever wish for in a teacher. She was patient, warm, and kind. She went above and beyond to help me and would stay after school to tutor me for free. Mrs. Hargis even found books I enjoyed reading. She would celebrate my wins, big and little.
But what I remember most about Mrs. Hargis is how she made me feel.
When I was with her, I had confidence. She thought I was smart, and then I began to think that maybe I was smart, too. I started to see myself differently.

Because of her, I started to flourish in school. I developed a true love for reading.
By the end of second grade, I was reading at grade level.
As we celebrate the holiday season, I’m beyond thankful for Mrs. Hargis. I’m thankful that she believed in my potential, and I’m thankful that years later I get to be part of an organization that does exactly what she did for me: Help children be the best versions of themselves."

Be A Helping Hand
You can be a Mrs. Hargis, too. You can help students feel confident. You can give them encouragement. You can help them feel successful.
